Who thinks he's winning his trade war? Nobody has seen any of the agreements. He said tariffs would rebalance trade, fix immigration and stop drugs crossing our boarders. None of those things have happened. He claims to have opened up foreign markets for US product, but in every country he's said that about it was already that way.

Threatening economic nuclear war may create the illusion of concessions but the bad blood it creates will be enduring. The US tourism sector is getting hit hard as tourists from the bullied countries bypass the US. Sales of Tesla and other obviously American brands are collapsing. Driving any obviously American car in the EU or Japan would invite derision.

This will cross into the business to business space as well but it will not be as obvious as companies find suppliers outside of the US. There are relatively few industries where the US is the only supplier (IT services is the one exception).

Under Biden, is not the same as caused by Biden. The increase in inflation was/is a global phenomenon and in fairness to Biden, inflation was significantly less severe in the US than the EU or UK where I live. He received zero credit for this despite it being warranted. That aside, the tariffs and disruption under Trump is all of his own making. You may feel like there is no impact, but the changes Trump is bringing to global trade have only just begun due to the lag effect of advance stockpiling and companies absorbing the costs. This is only a temporary reprieve. The reality is that the US has increased its average tariff rate from something like 2.5 to 18% (the actual figures are listed in the article). You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realise companies cannot eat these levels of cost increases for long. Ultimately, it will be the US consumer and businesses that pays.

I don’t think that a successor would instantly remove them but I think what would actually happen is that a future President would negotiate free trade agreement country by country. The reason they will do that, is not because of reciprocal tariffs but because it's only a matter of time until countries start to heavily put taxes on US services. These will be the main factor a future President will try to get removed.

Governments don’t buy stuff, people and businesses do. If Americans stop buying international goods because of cost, tariff tax revenue drops. Tariffs will dampen demand, and the US market will no longer be attractive. It’s a downward spiral that will be unstoppable in a few years.

A future president will have to actually get Congress to remove the tariff powers from the president and limit them to 90 days for actual emergencies. I get the idea that in some circumstances there needs to be swift immediate action on trade. But any tariffs imposed as an emergency approach should have a firm expiration date like 90 days. I suppose we look at the example of President Biden, who retained some of Trump’s first term tariffs, but unwound other ones.

Should be noted that President Biden went in further on anti-China tariffs than Trump term 1 with the *targetted* EV tariffs, but simultaneously relieved steel tariffs on the EU.

Trumps foolish tariffs have changed trading to favor China and the rest of the world.  We are no longer a stable trading partner.  Since agreement can change on the whims of a 2 year old mentality, we no longer can be trusted.  The rest of the world will just start buying goods and from stable trading partners.  This will slowly kill American business which will not be able to compete with China and other nations, other nations cost donot go up.  They still have the resource to build the product and cheaper labor.  The only place the price goes up is to the American consumer. Here is why they wont, competitive advantage. For all the failures of global trade and there's a multitude what you can not deny is the wealth creation via competitive advantages. Consequently most of trumps tariffs will be removed.

More likely what you'll see is an environment where US households save more relative to what they spend. This will drive higher investment into the US and by US households. And ultimately help get to a more balanced economy.

The article is fundamentally correct.  The US is teetering on a debt crisis.  We need the revenue and we don't have the stomach to raise income taxes on the majority of the population.  As a result, taxing the consumption of foreign made goods and services is basically all we have to raise a massive amount of money.  

Maybe you can push through a wealth tax or increase income tax on the top 1% but that only gets you so far and likely doesn't get you anywhere near the hundreds of billions that tariffs will raise.

IMO, this is going to be permanent.  I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years other countries follow suit to try to control their debts.

It's possible that we'll elect either a president or a congress that will develop trade practices that are logically derived.  Perhaps someone that understands that tarrifs are another form of tax.  That foreign governments don't .  It's possible that well get to the point where the amount of imports declines so much that the anticipated tarrif revenue dwindles.

One of the few smart tariffs Trump has implemented because it actually has a moral and legal backing in weakening a foreign aggressor. It is also putting pressure on Europe indirectly to follow his negotiating position without Europe being able to openly retaliate. All the strategic industries are also exempt so the damage to the US is minimal. India has almost zero leverage so they will need to comply eventually or wait out the negotiations. Any talk of the relationship falling apart is just bluster. India has no other options having weakened the only other bloc themselves.

It's funny they pretend they want to bring back manufacturing and dominance (as if we'd lost that) to the US, but one of the main things that brought all that to the US in the first place was engineering and science - both from home grown boys and girls and from brain drains from elsewhere to here.

I'm aware of two organizations that have suffered under the tariff taxes.. Time will tell however sourcing manufactured end item products from American organizations is proving to be hard and expensive if you can even get a quote.

Tarrifs have been capitulated by most foreign governments and virtually no opposition has been found globally apart from china and Canada which will never unite. Trump’s tariff implementation may have been awkward but it has no formal government coalition disparaging it and every gov has been either fighting it separately or hashing out deals. And even can/china are trying to make away with them with inducements. Trump has achieved his permanent secondary objective of showcasing American supremacy and is pretty close to having tariff deals written by individual countries instead of some farcical rejection or global trend towards third hegemonies like the EU materializing. Trump’s tariff showcase is a very real picture of both American soft power and of how absurd some recent EU/chinese/global think pieces proclaiming the end of American influence are and how the euro or BRICS are right around the corner. They are.  The neocon republicans and associated media, who are the neoliberal free-trade wing, have been screaming about that since he started running on tariffs back in late 2015.  It's just that outside of elite circles nobody cares about free trade anymore.  Reagan's promise of it bringing prosperity has proved to be a lie and so the public is against it now.

Because it wasn't free to begin with. It's  "fair-trade" now. Biden imposed tariffs as well but people didn't care.

Mamdani is just saying what people what to hear. All his proposed plans have a cost and have a collective agreement that they are detrimental.

Well, yes, but no capitalist system in the world runs on a purely free trade model. However, tariffs should not be mistaken for anti-capitalism either.

If capitalism remained an unapplied, static  textbook concept, you wouldn't read discussions on tariffs, rather, postulations of a utopian application of free trade amongst selfless, motive-free regions and nations. However, real world application has shown that **there is no capitalist system in the world that exists without tariffs**\--a global economy demands it in a world full of countries looking out for their own best interest and, because of it (as already mentioned) there is no capitalist system in the world that runs on 100% free trade. Which is to say, you don't need 100% free trade for it to exist within historic, modern, and current capitalist systems.

Current tariff and trade negotiations are nothing new--each administration adds tariffs and renegotiates on an ongoing basis. Even the last administration saw Biden keep the bulk of Trump era tariffs, even going so far as *adding* on to some, as he did in regards to Chinese tariffs. Ongoing tariff negotiations outside of settled ones (China, UK, Vietnam, Taiwan and the majority of countries applied with a non-negotiable baseline tariff or alternate tariff program) are to make terms more equitable for the US. This is a part of any US government representing and advocating American best interest on the economic global stage.

I'd rather judge this administration's failures in a year instead of less than 6 months in. Gives more credibility to what it said because then we'll have seen the results of the final negotiations and the consequences, whether good or bad.

Socialist leftists have always opposed free trade.  Go look at what Bernie Sanders was saying about those late 1980's free trade agreements.   Their argument has always been that it's just a means for corporations to get around the rights that American workers fought so hard for.  Tariffs is what prevented that.  Free trade allowed the corporations to just move their plants/factories to countries where the workers had no rights.

The corporations own the media, and they simply used it to convince Americans that this is what's best for their own interests.
